  • The current date range of 1910-20 has to be wrong.

HMS York wasn't even launched until July 1928, and the fitting out that the ship has clearly received here wasn't completed until 1930.

  • Interesting. Most of these date ranges are worked out by what else is in the same film can. In this case it seems to be mostly WW1 footage.

But your research is quite correct. So is this from the 1930s or is it not the HMS York? Any ideas?

  • Comparing the ship in the clip against the second picture on the attached page, it perfectly matches HMS York, so I think we can be confident of that ID.

The film must therefore presumably date from the early 1930s, (even though the film looks to be older).

British Pathe captured many extraordinary events on film over its 80 year history but sometimes the cameras were switched on when tragedy struck.

On June 4 1913, suffragette Emily Wilding Davison made her way in to the history books when she fell under the hooves of George V’s horse at the Epsom Derby. But was it intentional?
