"Corporal Angus" is Lance Corporal William Angus. He was a former player for the Celtic football club.
"Lieutenant Martin" is James Martin.
"The men wear berets with checked borders" - this is the cap of the Highland Light Infantry.
"he seems to be temporarily lame" - Angus received some 40 separate injuries (including the loss of his eye) during the action for which he won his Victoria Cross.

Given that the battle in which Young won his Victoria Cross took place in 1915, the date range can safely be reduced to 1915-18.
