  • "Corporal Angus" is Lance Corporal William Angus. He was a former player for the Celtic football club.

    "Lieutenant Martin" is James Martin.

"The men wear berets with checked borders" - this is the cap of the Highland Light Infantry.

"he seems to be temporarily lame" - Angus received some 40 separate injuries (including the loss of his eye) during the action for which he won his Victoria Cross.

Details of his heroics can be seen here.....

  • Thanks. Anyone know what happened to William in later years?

  • Given that the battle in which Young won his Victoria Cross took place in 1915, the date range can safely be reduced to 1915-18.
