  • Judging by the following magazine report, this I think is footage of the famous airmen Alcock and Brown, (John Alcock and Arthur Brown), about to receive their knighthoods.

The report describes how "both officers had a most enthusiastic reception at Windsor and were escorted by a crowd of Eton boys from the station to the castle.....

Note that the piece describes how the pair were mobbed on the way to the castle, not on leaving it as the shots list currently says.

If my assumption is true, this would make the date of filming 21 June 1919, requiring a change of the clip's current date.

  • My suspicions have been confirmed, I've just found some of the same footage in Pathe clip 279.02, at the 02:42 timepoint, confirming that this IS footage of Alcock and Brown.

The commentator says that the footage is shot after the knighting though, so disregard my earlier comment on that score.

  • A great help. Thanks.

Terrorism is nothing new. The Pathe archive has a vast collection of material related to terrorist attacks dating back to 1919 right through to the 2005 London bombings.

British Pathe captured many extraordinary events on film over its 80 year history but sometimes the cameras were switched on when tragedy struck.
