Description

Material assembled for an uncompleted documentary probably put together in the late 1940s. Sound is intermittent throughout. There is no complete shot listing - please let Pathe know if you spot something we have missed.

This reel covers 1919 and the 1920s.

Signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty. British fleet. Soldiers returning and on parade. Sequence showing celebrations at the end of World War One - Victory March on Westminster Bridge in London. Marshal Foch. Celebrations in France (?) Royalty watching march past, speeches are made, a plane is flown through l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris, various aircraft stunts are seen, ships are seen under fire and sinking.

Fun on a beach in the late 1910s, large crowds in the streets, - possibly Berlin. Burial of "the unknown soldier". Unveiling of the cenotaph. Boxers Bombardier Billy Wells and Joe Beckett are seen in C/U. Also Georges Carpentier. Three women read a newspaper - suffragettes? Lenin presents a standard. The burning of Smyrna. The Princess Royal's wedding. Mussolini's march on Rome. Duke of York's marriage to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. They are seen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Tokyo earthquake - city is seen in ruins. Andrew Bonar Law, Stanley Baldwin and Duke of Devonshire (?). First Labour Government. Mount Everest expedition and its survivors. Wembley Stadium thanksgiving. French troops leave the Ruhr. Duke of Windsor, Ramsay MacDonald, Stanley Baldwin. The Hindenburg airship in flight. Stevenson's Rocket steam engine. R 33 airship with damaged nose. Queen Alexandra at a hospital on Rose Day. Queen Alexandra's funeral in the snow. British troops leave Cologne. Kaiser and his wife.

Suzanne Lenglen plays tennis. Scenes from the General Strike including commuters making their way to work, milk being unloaded, queues. Rudolph Valentino lying in state. Stanley Baldwin, Winston Churchill and Empire representatives. Dominion Premiers review the British Fleet. Small aircraft is launched from the R 33 airship.

Amendment May 2011:
The ship blown up may be USS Virginia BB-13, being used for US Navy and US Army Air Force aircraft bombing tests in September 1923.
