M/S of a large crowd of men running along a street past houses and parked cars, panning right to follow them. M/S of a man in another street throwing a ball high into the air. M/S of the crowd of men scrambling and fighting for the ball in the street, right near a zebra crossing; C/Us as they scuffle for the ball and all crush together in a big scrum; M/S of two old men in flat caps watching.

Commentator tells us this is "a game, played annually at Jedburgh in Scotland...called Fastern's 'Een Ba' (or in English,, Candlemas Handball) has gruesome connections - it originated when after a battle the victorious Scots played football with the heads of their dead enemies." High angle shot as the crowd crush in a scrum for the ball; M/S of the scrum - there are some policemen standing by keeping an eye on things.

Commentator says "Now, it's slightly more civilised with one half of the town versus the other. The aim is to grab the ball, hide it, and then get it across the enemy touchline."

M/S of a young man in the street throwing the ball; high angle M/S of the scrum; M/S as a man gets hold of the ball and runs a short way up the street as the crowd follows. C/U of a group of spectators (mostly women) watching - a couple of women hold paper bags (with food in them?); M/Ss and C/U of the scrum.

Note: print used for transfer; mute neg is incomplete. Good scrum scenes! Documentation on file includes cameraman's notes on the game and a small guide book about Jedburgh.
