M/S of a group of mums with small children and prams walking along the street in an industrial part of Liverpool. They go in through a factory gate. The mums take the children to a room and help them take their coats off. Some children look a bit miserable they are aged about 3 to 4 pre school age. A boy waves goodbye to mum. There are 20 kids in the nursery. There are cut away shots to the women machinists working with fabric.

There is a lovely sequence of shots of the children saying prayers, followed by the women laughing as they queue in the canteen. The women in the nursery dish out the food and serve the tiny children their meals. We see them eating, sitting at small tables. It looks like peas, potatoes and stew. One boy eats as if it might taste horrible, but a little girl manages well with a big spoon, even though she has some on her face.

We then see the children asleep, on little camp beds covered with blankets for their afternoon nap. Harold Lamkin, the managing director, comes to look at them sleeping. At the end of the day, we see the women clock out, carrying their kids. C/U shot of money put into wage packets. The children each get 3 pennies for their 8-hour shift! One little girl turns out her wage packet to check her wages.
