  • The engine seen here achieved the first authenticated run of over 100mph (hitting 105mph) in the UK.

    The record was achieved on 5 March 1935.

    The engine is LNER Class A3 locomotive number 2759, named "Papyrus".

    Although the driver is often documented as William Sparshatt, it seems that his family name was actually Sparshott.
