Fascisti seizure of power: March on Rome; October 30; 1922. Mussolini's paramilitary groups marched on the capital from 4 directions; before they had arrived the King; who had been going to declare a state of siege & enlist the army to fight the Fascists; suddenly changed his mind. Mussolini then insisted on being named Prime Minister and on Oct. 30th the Fascists entered Rome and held a victory march. Shot from high above panning over absolutely gigantic crowd in square.
Shot from street level: march approaching: Benito Mussolini and his leading supporters; wearing top hats & coats; some wear military uniforms; photographers hurry by alongside. Shot looking down at more marchers: 2 groups meet from opposite directions and join in straight line (seem to march right under camera); some young teenage boys. Next MLS panning on men standing in rows on steps; wearing breeches; robes and hats w/ feathers; looks like Benito M. in ctr. of screen. Next; a priest and several soldiers march toward cam.; guy running to catch up.
LS Row of women in dark clothing; wearing medals (widows or mothers of casualties?) stand in front of row of men in fancy military dress. More marchers. Next; soldiers in helmets in FG; behind them a tramcar w/ crowd both inside it & on top. More marchers carrying big flags. MS a young Fascist general shakes hands w/ someone. Wide shot Fascists pose on base of statue of Victor Emmanuel II. Revolutions; coups; government; politics; fascism; parades; processions.
