A woman arrives in Corsica for a holiday on her own. She walks along with her suitcase. She has a look around Ajaccio, speaking to fishermen and watching one mend his nets. She feels a bit lonely as the ship which had brought her to the island sails away. She walks through the small streets. Statue of Napoleon. She walks by the sea and looks out at the view. She wanders through the market place. She sits at an outside cafe. A man raises his glass to her and she gives him a withering look. A waitress brings her a drink. She gets on to the bus for Porto and a young man carries her suitcase on for her. He attempts to sit next to her but instead a "fat man" who smokes sits next to her. She is offered a drink from a bottle of wine but she refuses. Someone starts a sing-song and our heroine relaxes: "it was the jolliest bus ride I've ever been on". C/U of the bus driver swerving all over the road. She gets off the bus in Porto and heads off to the hotel. It is a long walk and she gets blisters. She takes her shoes off and rubs her feet. The young man comes along and carries her case for her. They make friends although he cannot speak English - his name is Michel. She brushes her hair on the balcony of her room looking at the sunset with a melancholy song on the soundtrack.
