M/S of a man wearing red tuxedo walking across a circus camp with a whip in his hand. C/U shot of a caravan window in which a young girl appears. She is obviously talking to the man from the previous shot. M/S of the girl leaving the caravan holding a big whip in her hand.
Girl is 13 years old Gloria Smart, daughter of the circus owner Billy Smart. During the day she goes to school and after school she is trained by Rudolf Jurkshat to present his performing ponies.
M/S of the girl talking to her trainer. The trainer teaches the girl how to use a whip. C/U shot of the girl's face as she practises. M/S of people leading several ponies into circled area and getting them ready for practice.
Several shots of the girl making ponies walk in circle and line up under supervising eye of her trainer while her family proudly watches her. M/S of Gloria feeding the ponies well deserved sugar after a successful line up. "Gloria's control of the ponies comes from many months of training in the evenings and weekends" - informs the voiceover.
C/U shot of the girl's attempt to make one of the ponies kneel. The pony does not realise what is expected from him but she keeps pulling the muzzle downwards while touching his leg gently with the whip. Although she does not use force, the scene can be painful to watch and very disturbing for animal lovers.
Note: The combined print was used for the transfer due to "pitted-dirty" emulsion on the mute/track neg which would print through. Requires ultrasonic cleaning.
