    Dieppe, France.

    VS. of German coastal defences / artillery firing on allied landing craft on Dieppe beaches. German troops firing at invading forces. Explosions of buildings.

    Various good shots of battle between Spitfires and German anti-aircraft guns in and around Dieppe. The Spitfires leave vapour trails in sky. CU. Burning Spitfire on beach.

    VS. of wrecked tanks, landing craft and bodies lying on beaches. VS of dead Canadian soldiers lying on beach. Corpses are washed up onto the beach. Shot down planes on beach. CU of RAF symbol with bullets holes. More dead tanks and people. CU Canada arm flash on dead soldier. Tin helmets in barbed wire and on beach.

    VS of Canadian soldiers being rounded up by Germans on the beaches and in the town of Dieppe. Many are dressed only in underwear and many are injured. CU. Pan along captured arms and helmets in piles. The prisoners of war (POWs) are marched away to the country.

    N.B. The combined British and Canadian raid on Dieppe in August 1942 is regarded as a terrible failure. 4,000 of the 6,000 troops were killed, wounded or captured. These scenes are very graphic and should be used with care. MD
