    Benares - India, 1924.

    Scenes from Benares ( later called Varanasi ); a holy city on the Ganges River w/ c.1500 temples; shrines; & palaces.

    Many impressive shots panning on hillside w/ large buildings of different styles; & steps leading down to river; crowds cover whole area; some sitting under awnings or large round; nearly flat umbrellas. Boats on river. Several tracking shots from boat on river. Hindu pilgrims at foot of steps bathing in Ganges; masses of people going up and down steps; drying their bodies w/ towels; shaking or hanging up the towels to dry; taking off or putting on outer clothing; etc. - panorama of moving fabric. Also closer shots of people in the river; scooping up water; women in saris stand.

    Amazing ornate temples; shots of details of architecture. Mosque of Aurangzeb; on hill in distance. Crafts: 2 children stand in front of stacks of many clay pots of different sizes stacked up in front of house. CU artisan painting decorations on a pot. He turns pot round to show beautiful design.

    Young boy driving a pony cart. People tending bonfire. Other boys drive water buffalo carts w/ water tanks wetting street. At end of story; a bizarre looking man sitting cross-legged; naked except for beads round his neck and a hat; smokes from an odd pipe; from the look of him it contains some strong drugs! Shot of him standing up - full frontal nude! Finally; a midget beggar w/ very skinny legs; maybe rickets etc. He turns all the way around; using a stick; then sits. Wears chain of flowers.

    Religion; customs; ethnic groups; tradition.
