M/S of bed testing equipment; a wooden block with a mattress base inside, two large black mummy-shaped figures suspended over the base and attached to equipment at the side and a large weight suspended over one side. Two men in brown coats hoist a mattress onto the base and lower the figures onto it.

C/U of a large clock showing the amount of years' wear the mattress is being tested for then M/S of the two figures turning over and over on the mattress; they are rotated by two large metal arms at the end of the bed. M/S and C/U of the weight at the side of the mattress being raised and lowered; commentator says "to represent a 12 stone man sitting on the edge to put his socks on".

M/S of the end of the mattress showing the machinery working to rotate the figures; commentator tells us that Tommy and Tess (as the figures are known) each weigh 12 stone. Various M/Ss and C/Us of the weights turning on the mattress and C/U of one of the men looking on. M/S as they stop the machines, begin to hoist the figures off and C/U of a man winds a chain attached to a hook to raise the figure. M/S as the men lift the mattress off; C/U of the clock showing it has been tested for the equivalent of 6 years.

M/S of two men examining the mattress; C/U as they rip it open at one end and inspect the white felt, then rummage further to check the springs, first pulling back layers of what looks like horsehair. M/S as they examine the springs and one of the men (wearing a suit) makes notes on a clipboard.

Note: interesting little film, with some colourful mattresses taking part! Documentation on file includes some newspaper cuttings about 'Tommy and Tess', more details on the machinery shown at this Northampton bed manufacturers and a letter from Public Relations (Industrial) Ltd, about the possibility of making the film.
