  • Description

    Chessington Zoo, Chessington, Surrey.

M/S of a lion lying on the rock, roaring. Cut to a lioness walking. She stops to pose for the camera. Shot - reverse shot combination of lion and lioness - comparison shots. Lioness is "dreary-looking and positively dowdy in comparison to the majesty, the magnificence of the male" - voiceover tells the audience.

Cut to a succession of very picturesque long shots of a herd of deer running across a field. They look magnificent. Camera pans from males to females and back. "Stags have all the glamour" - claims narrator - the male is the monarch with all the adornments..."

Cut to a panning shot of two ducks in a pond - one is very colourful and the other is plain (grey-brown). A few more ducks join them. There is a noticeable difference between the colourful ducks and the plain ones. The colourful ducks are males - informs the voiceover. This serves as one more example of the magnificence of the male.

The film claims (and attempts to demonstrate) that only in the world of humans does the female appear more glamorous than the male.

Note: This film is a good example of strong patriarchal attitudes and conservatism of the 1950's.

Verbal warfare at its best. Here are some of history's greatest retorts and snarling insults. These people certainly didn't mince their words!
