    Albert of Belgium. Location of events unknown.

    King Albert I of Belgium and the British Ambassador inaugurate a memorial monument to the c.58;600 British soldiers who died at Ypres during Great War. 1927. Wide shot from angle of large monument w/ classical columns set into wall on either side of big arch. King Albert & other VIPs walking down street toward cam. Military band (seated) playing; crowd stands around them.

    This is not "a" war memorial; the footage deals with the inauguration of the Menin Gate Memorial in Ieper (Ypres in English) on the 24th July 1927. Two people are seen making a speech. The first shot, from the left, shows king Albert. The second, filmed from the right (British side, Belgian soldiers standing on the left hand side, ) is field marshall Herbert Plumer. The "saluting soldiers" is probably during the performance of the "Last Post" by the Somerset regiment. Later the Scots Guard pipers play a Lament from the ramparts. See also
