MS. Sir Stafford Cripps, Chancellor of the Exchequer, seated at desk at the Treasury. He rises to greet Mr Norman Mighell, Australian High Commissioner, who presents cheque - natural sound. He presents the cheque in the name of the people and Government of Australia. Sir Stafford replies - natural sound: "Mr Mighell I would ask you to convey to your government and your people the most sincere thanks of the British people to this further example of Australian generosity. This is the third occasion in the last three years upon which such a cheque has come from Australia, making in all the large total of £45,000,000 Australian or £36,000,000 sterling. This amounts to more than 5 million (mistake) pounds for every man woman and child in Australia. The gift in reality represents food and raw materials and it's a very present help to us in our time of need, and by this gift the Australian people are joining us once again in the endeavour to help Europe to fulfil its recovery. That's an encouragement, not only to us, but to all Western Europe as well. One of the good things Mr Mighell that has come out of the difficulties of this post-war period is that it's drawn us all nearer together within the Commonwealth and shown us how closely drawn are the bonds of respect and affection by which we're linked. We thank and honour the Australian people for the vision and kindness which has prompted them to send us another gift." LS. Cameraman walks forward to Sir Stafford to point out his mistake and ask for retake. He repeats sentence inserting £5 per head instead of £5,000,000. MS.
