FOOD & DRINK

KEYWORDS: FOOD, DRINK.

There are two very distinctive types of "food" story in the Pathe archive; serious items about the "politics" of food and more fun items about food production and consumption.

During rationing the "Food Minister" was often in the news inspecting production and commenting on aid shipments both to and from Britain. During the war items often covered tactics used to increase the efficiency of food distribution to, and the quality of the end product for, the front lines.

There are also a great number of lighter stories about specific foods and none are more prominent than "egg" related ones! From the "egg-o-matic" dispenser through frozen eggs, egg artists, egg massages, the cooking of 5000 fried eggs in one morning, an egg cracking machine that gets through 8000 eggs per hour, Easter Eggs and, of course, Egg and Spoon Races, eggs were never far from the news editors' in tray!

Bread was always a hot item as well; anything from a bread buttering machines to baking, slicing, and freezing were often featured, particularly during the war…

For those who prefer drinking to eating the majority of relevant stories (and there are hundreds) in the archive are about beer, wine, milk, tea, or cocktails.

Enjoy!
