Winter. Frozen lake. Spring. Great Crested Grebes swim around in little groups. A Grebe dives for food. Courting exercises. The birds imitate each other. Nesting sites amongst the reeds. The birds look for a good place to nest. A pair of Grebes build their nest together. A Coot tries to take possession of the nest. The pair continue to build. They nod their heads and wave their necks affectionately from time to time. Female Grebe sits on her nest of 4 eggs. Mr Grebe goes off fishing. If female leaves the nest, she covers the eggs with weeds.
An arm comes in off screen and peels back the weeds to show the camera the eggs - weeds are replaced. Female returns and uncovers her eggs. She rearranges them and turns them with her beak. She is described as being: "rather a house proud lady". Female goes off for a swim and father takes a turn at sitting on the nest. Male pretends to be asleep when she returns to the nest. He leaves the nest and swims off and his wife resumes care of the family. Young birds are taken out to middle of the lake to feed on fish. The adults carry their young on their backs. Babies are given little pieces of feather to aid in their digestion of the fish. Top shot of the deserted nest. The babies are taught to dive and swim.
