From Pelota to Polo and from Art Competitions to Tug of War; the Olympics have abandoned many sports over the last 120 years. Some were much loved (baseball) and some less so (underwater swimming) and others were just odd (art competitions)! We have put together a graveyard gallery of Olympic sports.
Art Competition
Yes you read that correctly! Art competitions formed part of the modern Olympic Games during its early years, from 1912 to 1948. Medals were awarded for works of art inspired by sport, and there were five categories: architecture, painting and sculpture, as well as music and poetry.
If you fancy writing an Olympics poem then please do share it on Twitter with us @britishpathe.
Perhaps we should start a petition to get Watercolour Challenge back on TV?
