Why do your fingers and toes wrinkle if left in water too long?
Ready for a quick science lesson? The oily protective layer (epidermis), which normally prevents the outer layer of skin absorbing water, gets washed away. Now your skin starts to get bigger as it starts absorbing water. The outer layer is connected to the lower layer (dermis) in certain places and where there is no connection between the two layers, the skin cells are forced to corrugate...which causes the wrinkles.
