Brief History: Olympic Diving (1/20)
 

British Pathe recorded Olympic diving events from day one when the athletes hurled themselves off inner city bridges or wooden seige-like constructions. As camera technology improved so did the public's understanding of one of the Olympics' most exciting sports.

Deep into history
Diving didn't feature at the Ancient Olympics but we know from ruins near Naples and "The Tomb of the Diver" (a tomb depicting a young man diving from a narrow platform) that diving has been a spectacle sport since at least 480BC.

Diving was an ancient method of hunting, exploring, gathering lost riches following battles and shipwrecks, and of course good old fashioned fun and showing off.
