Following on from our series of Diamond Jubilee galleries we felt it was time to celebrate other elements of British culture that make us proud. We asked everyone in our London office what sprang to mind when you say Best of British. This is the Top 25! Any guesses?
25. Fish And Chips
Kicking off our chart at number 25 it's fish and chips! The first fish and chip diner on record opened in 1860, although Charles Dickens mentions a "fried fish warehouse" in Oliver Twist some years before.
Fish and chips started in the north of England and was an instant hit amongst the British working classes. One of the few meals to be unaffected by rationing during the war fish and chips remains a British signature dish to this day. Traditionally served in newspaper, the wider cuisine also includes mushy peas, pickled eggs and "scraps" of batter.
